Condado Lagoon Facts and Interesting Information for Visitors

Condado Lagoon features Jaime Benítez National Park

Condado Lagoon (Spanish: Laguna del Condado) is located in Condado, a beachfront community in Metro San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Condado Lagoon is a body of water that flows between the neighborhoods of Santurce and Miramar.

The Condado Lagoon National Park, (aka) Jaime Benítez National Park is located next to the Laguna del Condado. The park is frequented by dog walkers and joggers. Before the COVID Pandemic free movies were shown on a huge inflatable screen on the great lawn on the first Saturday of the month at 7pm.

The boardwalk includes a ramp for easy access to the water. The Puerto Rico Canoe and Kayak Federation also practices in the Condado Lagoon, launching from the park.

There are signs inside the park with information on the flora, fauna, and bodies of water that surround the area. It has benches, a gazebo, free parking, and restrooms.

Condado Lagoon is Part of the San Juan Bay Estuary

Its tributary stream of water forms part of the San Juan Bay Estuary. An estuary is a coastal area where freshwater from rivers and other inland water sources mixes with saltwater from the ocean.

The Metropolitan Area of Puerto Rico is intersected by estuarine bodies of water, such as Condado Lagoon, Martín Peña Channel, San José Lagoon and Piñones Lagoon, among others. The Cucharillas Marsh is another part of this urban ecosystem.

Condado Lagoon flows into the Atlantic Ocean through the El Boquerón inlet and is spanned by the Dos Hermanos Bridge through the San Antonio Creek.

It is one of two natural lagoons in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Kayak Rental in the Condado Lagoon

Our kayak rental experience is really special because of the natural beauty and the ecosystem of the lagoon. It is very common to come across manatees that feed on seagrass and that live in harmony with many other marine species.

The lagoon is an important natural reserve that is protected for study and conservation as it is part of the San Juan Bay estuary. It also has a community of natural and artificial reefs that make the experience even richer.

The flora, the mangroves (seen in picture below), the landscape and how the species live in their natural ecosystem is an experience added to the watersports to be performed in the lagoon.

Kayaking and Paddle Boarding (SUP) in the Condado Lagoon

Because the lagoon is separated from the Atlantic Ocean, except for a small inlet, the water in the lagoon is always calm for kayaking and paddle boarding (SUP) in the Condado Lagoon. This makes it an ideal place for non-motorized water sports such as kayaking and stand-up paddleboard (SUP). Motorized boats are not allowed in the lagoon.

Kayaking in the Condado Lagoon is special for nature lovers because of the variety of wildlife and ecosystem of the lagoon. It is common to come across manatees that feed on the seagrass.
