Supporting Local Puerto Rico Start-ups, and recommending Pick-n-Drop PR to Parallel 18

The following is my Letter of Recommendation for Pick-n-Drop PR to technology incubator Parallel 18.

I’m Mark Derho representing my own tourism and technology businesses in Puerto Rico, and I am grateful to be here and excited to participate in the local community.  I’m happy to document my support for local entrepreneurs and specifically Pick-n-Drop PR.

It’s an honor that my Condado location (18 Calle Marseilles) has be chosen to be the first Pick-n-Drop PR physical location to host customers seeking short-term luggage storage. Last day luggage is becoming a more established service for tourists and this exciting local Internet-based startup business has every opportunity to be successful.

I believe the two men involved will greatly benefit from Parallel 18 and the variety of business and process training, access to proven mentorship, and unique access to grants and investors that will potentially help them scale nationally… and possibly even globally.

I also share the stated vision of Parallel 18 and Pick n Drop PR that Puerto Rico is the up-and-coming Caribbean hub for innovative businesses and technology to start and grow.

Also, as the men gain success and traction I do believe they will willingly engage and be proactive as student mentors.

Afa has proven to be motivated. He possesses an engineering, math and technical background that will serve him well in the competitive landscape in which he chooses to compete. I’ve also learned that he is not new to entrepreneurship and commitment and taking the ultimate chance on himself.

Giovanni Fuentes presents as an artist and creative person possessing a varied background that I believe forms a layered-vision for the business that also focuses on serving the public. Local training and life studies include anthropology and marketing with a successful background as a freelance photographer. Photography recognition in New York City by Humble Arts Foundation and features in multiple exhibitions via La Marqueza Retona.

I’ve enjoyed Afa’s enthusiasm and conversations so I have agreed to participate. It’s also worth note that he’s an athlete and a winner, having successfully represented the Puerto Rico National Rowing team for 4 years. Rowing requires focus of mind and hard-working muscle, great training for the competitive world. Additionally he is currently gaining financial industry experience as a data analyst with a Puerto Rico-based hedge fund.

I am already working well with a similar model and a business that is based in Canada. I absolutely see the value to tourists and I am happy to receive easily-acquired revenue every week.

Please call me with any questions or thoughts.

I believe your help will be greatly valued and appreciated.

Gestalt Website Design Competiton Challenge to All Puerto Rico Agencies

Gestalt Website Design Competiton Challenge to All Puerto Rico Agencies

I’m Mark Derho, small business owner and operator.

I also strongly believe that I am the best “gestalt” website designer in Puerto Rico. So much so that I am willing to spend my own time and money to prove it.

I also have a plan that will benefit charities!

Let’s start with measuring experience. I am an expert website designer for +27-years and a passionate always-learning SEO professional. I was also (*1) the very first web designer ever hired to work on the very first WYSIWYG website platform ever created, Internet Creator (1993).

Since 2010 in NYC, and now in Metro San Juan Puerto Rico, I lead a small digital marketing agency that practices lean methodoliogies and is unique in make-up, cost-effective top talent, and style and temperament

Let's "Throw Down the Gauntlet" and Challenge the "Goliath's"!

As biblical David did before me, I do hereby metaphorically “through down the gauntlet”, and offer my own: Gestalt Website Design Competiton Challenge to All Puerto Rico DMA’s”.

I’d offer to diretly battle the owners or heads of the agencies, but, we all know THEY DON’T HAVE THE ABILITY OR KNOW-HOW TO DO THE ACTUAL WORK. So I extend that challenge to any of their employees. Or really anyone that wants to take a swing.

Basic Rules of the Contest

Choose a local charity that doesn’t have a website and acquire/transfer domain.
Competition lasts straight 12-hours, working 10-hours with (2) 1-hour breaks.
Start with .org domain, and any clean web platform or CMS installed.
Bring no content: no themes, no images, no video and no pre-written text.
Measure technical specifiction results: page speed, page size, image size, etc.
Measure compliance with professional on-page SEO specifications.
Evaluate design standards for responsive, adaptive, color balance & theory, etc.
Evaluate results focusing on content creativity, uniqueness and relevancy.
Standard not measurable will be judged by mutually-approved 3-person panel

I worked very successfully for major Financial Brands, Internet startups and digital marketing agencies for more than 15-years in NYC. By 2010, I’d had it!

I too often saw creatiivity stomped-out, a fear of emerging technologies interfering with surrent tools and processes, common-sense ignored for the agencies bottom-lines. Quite often my role as a manager or director was to keep the gravy-train running. I became very frustrated watching and a whole bunch of well-pruned or “connected” executive-types getting paid too much and not doing very much, if any… of the actual work.

In NY since 2010 as TECH SAVVY NYC, my small team and I are now based in San Juan. We’re now BLD BTR (build better), a “lean methodoligies-style business” with most members working remotely.

There are many measurable differences between a professional website and a website that does not comply with professional standards. A shocking number of our local businesses don’t even have a basic informational website.

On an Internet rife with big-name and big-money agencies, it can seem like there’s not much hope or opportunity to compete for the small business owner (aka) the “little guy”.

I want to change that here in Puerto Rico by empowering small business owners to dominate thier local Internet and local industry with modern, responsive adaptive websites that “get to the point” and are SEO-optimized and technical professional and also quantifiably grow the business and with measurement.

Furthermore, as a Google Partner for over 15-years (Engage for Agencies too) we use the best tools and best-in-industry platforms to empower clients. We also can provide training to clients so that they can maintain and update their own websites.

Big corporations and agencies have big budgets so they will engage (and pay) many seperate individuals to accomplish the job; including project managers and product managers and art directors and coders/developers and graphic designers and quality assurance analysts, and on, and on. Then you get to the layers of executives who usually get paid much more than the ones doing the work.

Based on my many, many years of experience I strongly suggest many and most big name fancy pants agencies will charge around 10x what it actually takes to do the job.

This is why a website that should cost $1000 to build, will cost $10K-$15K and a $3k – $5K website will cost you closer to $30K – $50K.

Also, this is not “spec work”, so Agencies cannot and will not send a potential employment prospect to prove themselves and thereby work for free.

BTW & IMHO, if any agency ever asks you to do free spec work, say no and blow-them-up on social media. They are not working for free and nor should you. Also,  no one should be marginalized and then leveraged to try to get a job. Also, unpaid or low-paid interns are BS too. – Mark Derho

I’ve never stopped learning and studying and getting better at my craft. I try to grow as a human being everyday too. I hate losing and therefore I strive and pursue the “commitment to excellence”,  as was first dictated then defined by the great Al Davis.

The gestalt web design competition will consider modern tecnical specifications and measurable and include quantifiable and accepted standards of indutry-excellence.

I know there are a few big name fancy-pantsy award-winning important agencies that are anchored here in San Juan. Frankly, I am truly unimpressed with 95% of the work I have seen so far. And, I’ve seen it all before from working and competing on the Internet in essentially every vertical in NYC for close to 30-years.

As a kid, I took karate and proceeded to beat-up big bullies as a sport. I’m the “little guy” that will also stand with and for “the little guy”. I support charity and community. I love an underdog, and I am competitive as hell.

I challenge Saho McCann.

You’re my neighbor but you are not very neighborly (remember LinkedIn). Your website looks like your parking lot, very busy and loud. Congratulations, you’ve got a ton of awards and a giant shop. The colorful “PR-authentic art design” on your site is fine-enough. Have you ever heard of “organic on-site SEO”? You might not need it, but your clients certainly do! Your site is modern-enough with lots of video, but where are the links to your client’s sites? All sizzzle, no steak.

I challenge Websoft PR.

Would you like me to correctly configure your website SSL certificate for you? Joomla is outdated and unpopular with professionals for many reasons. Your own website is laden with stock images weak and lack any sense of creativity. Sadly, your site is trash. And why can’t I see your client websites? I guess I know why.   https://websoftpr.com/

I challenge OJO.

OJO should be called Oh No! Ugly, old-looking, and poorly-cartoonish. Yes, Websoft PR’s website is trash, yet. your website manages to be even worse. And, it actually makes my head hurt with those garish colors. https://www.ojomg.com/

“For me the difference is fairly clear. A competition shouldn’t ask a professional to provide work that will then be used for commercial gain in return for a prize. That in my eyes is a commercial transaction and should be treated as one. – Paul Boag

BLD BTR

New York City-style Digital Marketing and Website Design agency located in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Technology is Critical for Every Business

Command of technology should be a critical factor for every business. Relying on a page on Facebook is not an acceptable website alternative.

It’s rare to see any local business adhering to modern professional website design standards. Sites are not secured. Few sites meet Google’s mobile-first website standards. And a shocking number of businesses don’t even have a website.
