Hello, my name is Mark Derho.
I’m a contractor, consultant, journalist, and technology professional who’s also looking for the right long-term team to build with.
My career started because of one magazine. In 1993, I was on track to become a lawyer. I had just passed my paralegal exam and had a great job. Then I picked up the very first issue of Wired Magazine. It introduced me to the World Wide Web, and it completely changed the direction of my life.
I taught myself HTML and Photoshop, and I immersed myself in this new technology that hardly anyone understood.
I applied for a sales position with a startup called Foreman Interactive. Instead, I became the company’s first web designer, building websites with one of the first WYSIWYG web development tools, Internet Creator. Looking back, I was fortunate to be there pioneering the beginning of the commercial web.
Over the next fifteen years, I worked throughout New York City with Fortune 500 corporations, startups, government agencies, nonprofits, and media companies. Along the way, I wore many hats: web designer, developer, project manager, QA specialist, SEO strategist, content creator, documentation writer, and digital marketing consultant.
One of my favorite startup experiences was at CarDay, where I served as Director, managing a team of nine developers and designers while working directly with the CEO and CFO. Like many startups, it meant twelve-hour days, constant problem-solving, and learning how to move quickly without sacrificing quality.
Eventually, I built my own agency, Tech Savvy NYC, where I spent years helping small businesses establish their online presence. As an original Google Engagement Agency partner, I focused on websites, search marketing, digital strategy, and helping businesses grow through technology.
One of the most rewarding chapters of my career was leading the technology strategy behind what became the largest bike rental company in the United States. Together, we won a six-year, $60 million contract with New York City. I helped build the technology ecosystem, websites, marketing systems, business integrations, sponsorship programs, and digital infrastructure that supported a team of more than 150 people.
A few years ago, I moved to Puerto Rico and launched my own tourism business. Unfortunately, rising rental costs forced me to close it, but that experience pushed me toward the next major transformation in my career: artificial intelligence.
Since then, I’ve fully embraced AI.
I’ve become a contributing journalist for Resident Magazine, writing nearly 1,600 published articles covering artificial intelligence, technology, luxury real estate, hospitality, fintech, travel, innovation, and business leadership. Through interviews with CEOs, founders, entrepreneurs, and industry experts, I’ve learned how to communicate complex ideas in ways that engage both business and consumer audiences.
Today, I believe we’re standing at another moment like 1993.
Back then, the internet changed everything.
Today, artificial intelligence is doing the same.
I’m looking for an organization where I can contribute not just as a contractor or consultant, but as someone who understands technology from the ground floor, adapts quickly, and enjoys building products, solving problems, and helping great teams accomplish ambitious goals.
I’ve spent more than three decades evolving alongside technology. I’ve been fortunate to experience the birth of the commercial web, the growth of digital marketing, mobile technology, cloud computing, and now AI.
I’m excited for what’s next, and I’d welcome the opportunity to build it together.
Thank you for taking the time to get to know me, and I look forward to speaking with you.
